The Open Source Imaging Initiative (OSI²) e.V. is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting open-source medical imaging technology. Medical imaging plays a crucial role in diagnosing and treating various diseases, as well as advancing our understanding of their underlying causes. Our objective is to extend the health benefits of modern imaging devices to people worldwide.
With the backing of OSI² e.V., our community harnesses the collective knowledge and expertise of numerous experts in open-source designs, production, documentation, and operation of imaging instruments, including magnetic resonance imaging. Through open communication and non-exclusive utilization of this information, we enable:
- The construction and upkeep of devices at a fraction of the cost of current instruments.
- Sustainable enhancement of devices via knowledge and technology transfer to resource-limited regions.
- More transparent decision-making processes for enhancement, ongoing development, and scientific and clinical assessment of the instruments.
- Improved assessment of safety and performance.
Join us in revolutionizing global healthcare and making state-of-the-art diagnostics accessible anywhere in the world!

Why a non-profit organization?
Since its inception in 2016, the Open Source Imaging Initiative has garnered significant backing from the community. What began as an aspiration to enhance MRI accessibility has evolved into the creation of pioneering open-source MRI prototypes. These prototypes are now advancing towards clinical implementation, promising substantial benefits for patients. As our endeavors flourish, we’ve recognized the necessity for a structured organization to facilitate the scaling process of this project and numerous others.
This step enables us to gather resources, such as donations or grants, which we can utilize for:
- Collective purchases (hard- & software) to construct MRI scanners and other medical imaging devices, particularly in low-resource settings.
- Providing guidance to others in utilizing and rebuilding these devices.
- Enhancing the quality of documentation for open-source software and hardware projects in imaging.
- Developing and refining blueprints for regulatory approval of the devices.
- Sustaining and expanding the community of developers and users.
- Achieving our vision of Open-Source Medical Technology.
Science knows no country, because knowledge belongs to humanity, and is the torch which illuminates the world.
