OSI² eV is Launching a Conformity Assessment Body for Open-Source Hard- & Software Projects

Ever got frustrated that so-called open-source projects are not really open-source? Ever got annoyed that critical files or important information is missing to reproduce designs? So do we. To change that and to introduced documentation standards and improve documentation of current open-source projects, we have launched a conformity assessment body (CAB) that offers free project reviews by open-source experts. After successful assessment according to our checklist, each project receives an open-source score and rating and the full report including reviewer comments is published, of course, open-source. This helps the developers to assess if all critical information was provided and it helps users to assess what information is available to reproduce a design or software.

OSI² attestation for approved open-source projects

Reference to Current Standards

Our reference for the conformity assessment are the DIN SPEC 3105-1 and the DIN SPEC 3105-2 standards. DIN SPEC 3105-1 clarifies the fundamental requirements for open-source hardware, which builds upon OSHWAs definition regarding licensing terms. DIN SPEC 3105-2 defines a process for a community-based assessment scheme. An independent body, so-called Conformity Assessment Body (CAB), can moderate these assessments and publish all information under an open-source license online. OSI² eV has set up a CAB according to DIN SPEC 3105-2.

Attestation for Open-Source Projects

Our recently founded non-profit body OSI² eV will from now on issue attestations of conformity for open-source soft- and hardware projects within the scope of medical imaging technology. If you want your project to be assessed, proving that the provided technical documentation effectively allows anyone to study, modify, make and distribute it (including commercial use), submit it via our form or reach out to us via matrix or eMail.

Attestation and Open-Source Score

After approval, we’ll issue an attestation including a score and the corresponding project ID. The reviewer score determines our project rating on a tier-based scale:

  • Tier-1: Minimum requirements met (1 star)
  • Tier-2: Advanced documentation (2 stars)
  • Tier-3: Open-source Expert (3 stars)

The detailed scores and review reports can be assessed here.

Transparency on All Levels

Our review process is fully transparent. You’ll find all information here, including the review requirement checklist, review workflow and the final review reports for each project. If you have questions, suggestions or want to get involved as a reviewer, join our discussion channels on Matrix or contact us.
